Guilford Cathedral Service

By kind permission of the Dean and Chapter, Surrey Freemasons held their Annual Service at Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 17th October 2010. The Provincial Grand Master, Eric Stuart-Bamford and his wife Libby, hosted a lunch before the service for the invited civic dignitaries and their partners including mayors and council leaders from across Surrey as well as the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Charles Fowler. (Please see guest list below).

It is only on this annual occasion that Surrey Freemasons appear in public wearing their regalia and hundreds of Masons from all over the County in full Masonic regalia made a colourful scene to welcome the Provincial Grand Master and his executive committee. The Service celebrates and gives thanks for the Order and its work in the local community and is a family occasion showing the public face of Freemasonry in an imposing and accessible setting and demonstrating a real bond between Freemasonry, the community and the Cathedral.

The Sub Dean led the service and was assisted by the Reverend R. Anthony Miller of St. Paul’s Church, Nork, and Surrey Freemason’s Chaplain John Fleetwood and his Deputy, Bryan Page. The readings were by The Provincial Grand Master, Eric Stuart-Bamford, his deputy, Michael Yalden and the Mayor of Farnham, Cllr. John Ward. The Surrey Provincial Masonic Choir was in good voice and conducted by W Bro Colin Jackson, Provincial Grand Organist, whist the organ playing on this occasion was by the Deputy Provincial Grand Organist, W Bro B A Rayner

Support for Children at Number 1

The occasion, the formal opening of the new Play Garden by the charity’s Patron, Jesse Norman M.P. for Hereford and South Herefordshire. 1 Ledbury Road is a NHS Primary Care Trust Unit, opened in 1983, providing respite care for children and young people with disabilities. Children at Number 1 is a registered charity which supports this Unit by raising money to provide facilities within the Unit for which NHS funding is not available.

The cost of providing the new all weather Play Garden was £14,600; all the funding had been raised through the generosity of local people and organisations. One such organisation was the Herefordshire Province of Freemasons which gave a donation of £550 for a specific item of play equipment.

Ron Giles (centre), Chairman of the Friends of Children at Number 1, thanks Reverend David Bowen,
Deputy Provincial Grand Master of the Masonic Province of Herefordshire, for the continued support of the county’s Freemasons.
Also present, David Knowles, Provincial Grand Charity Steward. Such assistance enables the Unit to provide respite care for 50 Herefordshire families.

125th Anniversary acknowledged

The Hereford branch of theSoldiers, Sailors and Airmen and Families Association(SSAFA) received a much appreciated donation to mark its 125th Anniversary. The Chairman, Air Vice Marshall Mike Smart DL, was presented with a cheque for £5,000 by Reverend David Bowen,Deputy Provincial Grand Master for the Masonic Province of Herefordshire.

The donation was part of a £250,000 nationwide grant made to SSAFA this year by The Freemasons’ Grand Charity in London. This was in acknowledgement and recognition of the support given to the members the country’s Armed Forces and their families by SSAFA during the past 125 years.

At the presentation, emphasis was made of the work of SSAFA in Herefordshire. Air Vice Marshall Mike Smart, Officer Commanding RAF Credenhill some three decades ago, informed the assembled audience that Herefordshire had 24 trained caseworkers, all volunteers, working across the county. During 2009 it dealt with 92 cases involving both serving and retired servicemen, and particularly, their families. Clients ages ranged from early 20s having recently been involved in current conflicts throughout the world, to 90 year olds: £81,000 was disbursed in that twelve month period.

The Reverend David Bowen, having strong personal and parental association with the Armed Forces, particularly praised the volunteers of the Herefordshire Branch – one of the country’s smallest counties, but with an understandably high case load.

Squadron Leader Peter Berry-Ottaway, past serving member of the Defence Forces of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, with a 27 year service in the RAF Volunteer Reserve, and now the local Fundraising and Awareness officer, thanked the Deputy Provincial Grand Master in particular and Freemasons generally for such splendid support. Peter Berry-Ottaway said “SSAFA Forces Help exists today to help serving and ex-service men, women and their families, from the Armed Forces, the Reserves and the Territorial Army. It is estimated that more than 14 million people are eligible for assistance from SSAFA Forces Help – and the need is expected to increase. The national support given by The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is hugely appreciated.”
